Playful Gallery

What is Gallery to play

The concept of the „Gallery to play“ is the most important part of the Písek Sladovna programme.

Exhibits and programmes of the Gallery to play are primarily designed for children and „their“ adults where children meet art and art meets children. However, the works of art are purposefully open to direct interaction with visitors, so that children and adults alike can touch everything, get inside art installations, play with their framework and sometimes even enter the stories and experience them. Just like entering a computer game: in the Gallery to play you can enter a story and play in the real world, together with others, again, here and now.

We believe that „play – here and now – together with real children and adults“ is the basic and most natural quality that our children need to acquire in today’s world of endless possibilities of the virtual reality. And that’s what the Gallery to play offers: creating a new experience every single time you come visit us to play and to learn, no matter how old your children are.

Every year, we prepare about three large interactive exhibits that are either connected to the world of children’s books or to one of the topics we believe are important in our world. In addition, we offer a beautiful and inspirational play area for the littlest (Pilařiště), two exhibits dedicated to children’s book illustrations and a lot of space for single events, workshops or just to be.

Key Words

Play

Play is the most natural way for children to learn. The same applies to adults and cultures. Play is the most fantastic way of learning, developing and innovating thanks to its lightness and to being pretend (even though we know this is not always true), joyful and free. We respect this principle and we always strive to be a place for play.

Creativity

The human ability to create and its development and cultivation is what drives our work. We would not be able to bring such a diverse programme without creativity and the development of creativity and imagination is one of the most important topics we strive to develop in our visitors.

Children in the centre of events, parents welcome and learning through play

Exhibits in Sladovna belong both to children and their parents. Adults have the opportunity to learn from children, get charged with their energy and their free thinking. We prepare quality lecture programmes and we train our lecturers so that we can truly fulfil the legacy of Jan Amos Comenius: „school by play“.

Interactivity

The term of interaction (lat. interacti): in action among people and social groups means reciprocal influence, communication, alteration of action and reaction and interaction.

Date: 10. 9. 2013 – 5. 1. 2014 | Number of visitors: 13 643
Date: 18. 5. 2015 – 1. 11. 2015 | Number of visitors: 19 095

The ANTHILL exhibition offered visitors the opportunity to learn about the ants’ world as they had never done before – from the inside! Visitors became small ants and experienced a lot of adventures in the labyrinth of jungle gyms, corridors and chambers as they found themselves in the middle of a giant anthill. The concept of the exhibition, its artistic preparation and the production implementation were all the original work by Vladimír Větrovský, an artist.
Thanks to its huge success (and our own children), the project was reinstalled in Sladovna in 2015. We are planning to create another version of the Anthill in Sladovna, this time permanent.

The objective of the exhibition “LET’S (not) PLAY WITH FOOD!” was to teach visitors, in an unusual and playful way about the journey of food from the field to our tables through play and a lot of activities. ”Do your children know where milk comes from? Where eggs come from? How carrots grow? We put them in our combine-harvester and let them drive through the story of food“.

FOREST – THE STORIES OF FIVE TREES

simple post

Date: 17. 5. 2014 – 26. 10. 2014 | Number of visitors: 16 846

The original exhibit of Sladovna Písek o.p.s. – Forest – the Stories of Five Trees aimed at showing visitors the fragile soul of the forest and its trees. The exhibit created an interesting way into the heart of the forest: into the trees joined to a single living body through branches and roots. In the tranquillity and half-shade, in the fragile bodies of paper objects, visitors learned about their strength, searched for roots, trunks and crowns, listened to old stories hidden in the rings of the memory: the stories of five trees that led them through the miracle called FOREST.

TIME MACHINE

simple post

Date: 17. 11. 2014 – 26. 4. 2015 | Number of visitors: 19 623

– The exhibition was created originally by Sladovna Písek o.p.s. on the basis of the History of Europe, a book by Renáta Fučíková, an illustrator. The time machine offered a unique opportunity to travel through the European history. It did not aim at teaching visitors about history or substitute history lessons at schools. We just wanted visitors to try what was typical for the particular era, what life looked like and, for example, how difficult it was to get food. The exhibit provided a lot of playful and interactive elements so that visitors could learn about the important moments in the history as well as about everyday activities through discovery, play and experience.
The Time Machine interactive exhibit was opened in Sladovna until 26 April 2015. In summer 2015, the exhibit was transferred to Plzeň, a co-producer of the exhibit, as one of the cultural projects of Plzeň 2015 European Capital of Culture.

TRNKA’S GARDEN 2

simple post

Date: 16. 6. 2015 – 18. 10. 2015 | Number of visitors: 19 050

The Gallery to play brought to life one of the most popular books by Jiří Trnka (one of the most prominent illustrators and animators of books for children in the second half of the 20th century) – the Garden. The journey through the colourful and a bit mysterious Garden where you could find everything from the fantastic story – the mean cat, the reciting whale, the elephant and the dwarf – first captivated Plzeň, the 2015 European Capital of Culture, and then Písek.

Permanent exhibit: PILAŘIŠTĚ

simple post

from 15.3. 2015

We opened a play area at the very heart of Sladovna for the smallest visitors (12 months to 6 years), offering a safe and inspirational environment for play that they need at this age for their physical, motor, intellectual and psychological development and that also inspires with the beauty and playfulness of the artworks of Radek Pilař, a distinguished Czech artist of the second half of the 20th century who created many characters children know very well.

JOURNEY INTO THE UNKNOWN

simple post

Date: 22. 1. 2013 – 4. 5. 2013 | Number of visitors: 10 900

We introduced children to some of the history and literature that has formed the European cultural identity. The exhibit brought Odysseus to life and children had the opportunity to experience his sorrowful journey home from the Trojan War. They outsmarted the Cyclops, sailed between Skylla and Charibdis, fought with the gods of the wind and sea. The story was arranged in a way that let children act it out step by step and opened a door to the following interactive exhibits.

PLAY

simple post

Date: 17. 5. 2013 – 25. 8. 2013 | Number of visitors: 10 514

PLAY was a unique project by Petr Nikl, a Czech artist and author of children’s books, based on the original idea of J. A. Comenius ”Orbis pictus – The World in Pictures“.
The exhibit transformed the three floors of Sladovna into a playful space for children and adults and their activity was crucial for making instruments sound and move. Visitors created an atmosphere on their own that encouraged then to cooperate, communicate and listen together.
